Kyoto Math

proving Robert Kennedy Jr "is a bonehead".

Flight Cancellations

This headline fooled me last night. I didn't bother opening up the story because I figured the headline told the main part.....
sheesh

Hurricane Relief Donations

Here's a link to UMCOR, my charity of choice in this today.

Iraq Disaster

640 people killed in a bridge collapse.

The BBC has more, but I'm not clear about the cyanide.

The Washington Post doesn't mention the cyanide.

Katrina

For anything on this storm, see Michelle Malkin. The link is just yesterday's roundup.

The Empathatic Germans

Sunday I posted that German businesses were ready to oust Kyoto. Today their papers are blaming Katrina on Bush's lack of signature on Kyoto and recommending a Kyoto 2. You'd think for oh, maybe a day, they could say "anything we can do to help?"

Afghan Elections

Hope is a good thing. Afghanistan as a real democracy.

Citizen Smash

has a post by someone who infiltrated camp Casey.

Afghanistan's Election

With all the attention paid to the Iraqi constitution, I was missing all the women who are stepping up in Afghanistan!

Airstrikes

near Syria

Chavez

to take the US to court for Robertson's call.
Actually - I misread that. He's going to take legal action IN the US.
"I announce that my government is going to take legal action in the United States... to call for the assassination of a head of state is an act of terrorism," Mr Chavez said in a televised speech."

While selling oil to poor communities. I wonder how that will work? Say you sell to Central LA, do they then sell to a refinery, who then sells it back? We'll see.

Steyn

on Katrina. Or rather, people's resilience to quick disaster vs people's non-resilience to slow burns.

That list from yesterday

Has Chistopher Hitchins labeled a fascist.

Blogs Today

There seems to be some problem with a lot of the major bloggers today. I can't get into their sites. Wonder what the scoop is.....

List of Good

I like these lists: or bullet points of good.

Jesse

just likes being in the news. That's all I can figure from this ridiculous trip. He's there to lecture the US government about diplomacy? Because some nutjob spoke of assassination? That's an expensive trip.

Australia for people

who appreciate that which is Australia! Via Instapundit

Religious Fringe

groups give Christians a bad name. These folks are religious fringe, not religious right.

Sistani

Kyoto in NZ AND Germany

sounds like there is going to be two fewer members ASAP.

Steyn and Media Watch

Tim Blair often has fun eating these guys for supper and now they've decided to take on Mark Steyn. They have no idea who they're dealing with.
It's a slam dunk for Mark.

Iraqi Constitution

Missed this Steyn piece this morning on the constitution.
Money quote "to be sure, we shouldda done this, and we shouldda done that. Yet nonetheless Iraq advances day by day. The real quagmire is at home,...."

I'm with him. I think the Iraqis, deserve a lot more credit than they are given.

Inspirations for the Week ahead

Varifrank sends Cindy a reminder that we're the good guys.

Our nation routinely hands over its captured lands and assets to the local population after the war is over. Nations that have faced their utter destruction by the United States Military in war, often find themselves the recipients of the largess of its people after the war. While we all sit and discuss the construction of the Iraqi constitution, there is a lack of respect for the understanding that it was the men and women of the United States military that has made this miracle in Mesopotamia a reality. Where there was once a murderous dictatorship growing in influence there are now men and women constructing a democracy out of citizens all because of the work and sacrifice of the United States and the noble acts of its men and women in uniform.

Iraqi Constitution

is sent to parliament.

Here were some final discussions. It sounds like Iraq-the-Model has a person on the inside. Cool

More Able Danger

I was reading Captain Ed this morning thinking - "where does he get all this info..?" when I got to the update.

UPDATE: It turns out that I'm not the first to note Chapter 24 of Timmerman's book. Dafydd ab Hugh noted this all the way back on July 5th ... uh ... at Captain's Quarters. In an e-mail to me reminding me of my own blog, Dafydd suggests a new slogan for CQ: "Captain's Quarters is so dad-burned fast, we even scoop ourselves!"

Iraqi Marshes

This story made the mighty Longmont Times-Call the other day. It's a great, positive story on those marshes.
The Boston Globe covers it too.

Read them both. Bangkok's paper tells the story. In 2001 it was predicted these marshlands were dead and gone. However, they've been returning ever since the fall of Sadaam and were at 50% of 1970 range this spring.
Boston's paper also tells the story (via AP), but keeps the focus on reminding the reader that life sucks there for the people (poverty and danger) and that the marshes are far from being what they were.

But wait - let's see what Reuters has to say. Doom, doom.

MSM

Tim Blair introduces us to some journalists in training.

PC Police

and Gretchen Wilson. I'm surprised she blinked. Read the comments too - they're pretty funny.

Iraqi Constitution

quickie breakdown. 25% of the seats in parliament must be held by women. Though undemocratic, I'm happy to hear they will have to be represented.

Hindsight

and Able Danger. The latest person has stepped up to talk abou the Atta/Rahman connection. This story is interesting, but hindsight is 20/20. While the commission report may need to be rewritten, I'm not ready to hang anyone for it yet. Reading it the first time I was amazed at all the little connections and links and travel plans that they did find.
This guy, J.D. Smith, is saying that Atta and Rahman went to the same Mosque.....and the connection was found just by data mining that.
This story is far from done.

What's with the scare quotes?

Syria 'Hinders' UN's Hariri Probe

Why not just write, "Syria fails to respond to UN's Hariri Probe?"
Or "UN wants to write a statement codemning Syria for not responding but can't because of Russia and Algeria who they are 'scared' of".
Or "Another worthless Statement from the UN"
Or "UN Statement Codemns Everyone"

Israeli Memo

Apparently someone forgot to give Sharon the memo saying that giving up Gaza meant that they were giving up period. Captain Ed has his theories.

Kurilla Recuperating

Here's an update.

John Bolton

at work. It seems to me that at least a few meeting concerning reform might be in order since the oil-for-food, food=for-sex fiaxcos.

Not to be missed

Michael Yon in Mosul. Send him money.

Iraqi Constitution

compared with Afghanistan's, plus a cool picture.

Najaf clashes

From Iraq the Model. Based on phone calls from friends.

and the BBC

Kyoto

Gets a mention in Australia. New Zealanders are going to need to buy close to a billion dollars worth of carbon credits to cover themselves with this treaty.

What''s more, they will get credit if they build a big dam and pump water for clean energy. ......

Lance

I believe Lance. If he needed dope in 99, how did he win in 2004? Here's a spot with more links to look at.

MSM

Maybe this can be today's theme. A re-cap so twisted on itself it's hard to even call it a misquote. More of a 'I'll make this story sound like we're losing no matter what it takes.'

Gas and Inflation

Prices per gallon adjusted for inflation here.

MSM

Here they go again. Telling it like "it is".

War in Iraq

Powerline tells it like it is.

Saudi Blogger

I got up early this morning, so lots of stuff today. This Saudi blogger who lives in the UK I recently found. He's a good read. And it's a quick way to remember that there are tons and tons of reasonable Moslems out there.

Autumn

It's starting to feel like fall around here. Alaskan Photoblog illustrates the feel very nicely.

War Games

and what they could signal. From a guy who watches this stuff but has no special inside information.

Terrorism

in all its stripes. Losers.

Oil Prices

I know it's not a popular stance, but I'm with Kudlow on these higher prices. In fact, even as a wacko environmentalist, for the first time in years I've started really paying attention to how I much gas I use and that's a good thing.
I know around here at least they have subsidies to help the poor with heating bills. That's really the biggest worry. In the meantime, there are now incentives to develop other sources, buy smaller vehicles, build more compact houses etc, etc.

Steyn

re the Gaza withdrawal.

What the h***?

Pat Robertson on foreign relations. Idiot.

Lileks

His response to those who wrote him after his last screedblog.

"The Stolen Elections"

I can't believe how often this still comes up, so I will post this, the final word, so it can be at the ready for the next time.

Michael Yon

On writing from Iraq, and the letter to Zarqawi.

A Mullings

quickie re-cap of how things are going in the Middle East.

Iraqi Constitution

Big Pharaoh isn't happy with how things are going and gives you a number to call. The State Dept sounds like they are going to be ok with an Islamist state, whether that's what 1/2 the population (women) want or not! I don't really know how all this diplomacy works but it seems to me that we could at least say "we'd prefer X over Y"."

The Leading Republican

Escape from

hungry polar bears.

Polio

Was almost eradicated, but it's back according to the NYTimes. That's because of the fear that "the vaccine was a Western plot to make Muslim girls sterile or that it contained the virus that causes AIDS."

VDH

On biteback.

Darfur

Just to note that the UN suggest Darfur needs "urgent corrective action". Perhaps a time table would be helpful.

Wildlife

Glenn's 'before' part of this post is somewhat of a review of the book "The Beast in the Garden" about the return of the mountain lion to the front range.

able Danger: 2 Attas

And here you have it. I told you someone must have reviewed this stuff already and discounted it.

Cindy Sheehan

I don't like this story because basically this woman is just having a breakdown in public. Steyn, of course, puts it in perfect perspective.

"On unwatched Sunday talk shows you can still stumble across the occasional sane responsible Dem. But, in the absence of any serious intellectual attempt to confront their long-term decline, all the energy on the Left is with the fringe. The Democratic party is a coalition of Pat Sheehans and Cindy Sheehans, and the noisier the Cindys get the more estranged the Pats are likely to feel. Sorry about that, but, if Mrs Sheehan can insist her son’s corpse be the determining factor in American policy on Iraq, I don’t see why her marriage can’t be a metaphor for the state of the Democratic party."

Able Danger: 2 Attas

Don't you wish we knew all the secret stuff? This sounds plausible. It must have been reviewed already, by someone.

The coup in Mauritania

fyi

Saudi Arabia

File this under great news! (though I have to admit, I always wonder how people know who these leaders are. I mean is it on their nametag, or is it just the guys captured are singing? And if so, are they completely trustworthy?)

Air America

Their scandal deserves a re-cap now and then.

Pretty Picture

from Alaska. I still like looking at these every day.

Scott Randolph

Found through The Best of the Web, has a nice site and a great rant. He became popular real fast by declaring he's giving up his Democrat membership. He's overwhelmed his bandwidth, but it may be back later so keep checking.

Al qaeda Quagmire

Hey it sounds like we're winning!

Thursday, August 18, 2005

Michael Yon

If you're not already signed up for his updates, do so now. And send him money.

Saudi Arabia

the next tourist destination. lol

400 Bombs

In Bangladesh. That poor country gets slammed from every direction. If it isn't floods, or storms, now they have bombers by the 400s! Probably because of their interferance with Israeli/Palestinian affairs, or maybe their occupation of Iraq.

UPDATE: Oh wait, it was because Bush and Blair are in "Muslim Countries. There were leaflets. Sadly, they came AFTER the bombs. Otherwise, I'm sure the leaflets would have worked.

MSM and Attitudes

This was funny.

Amazing Pictures

of gaslines in China.

Hugh

On the influence of blogs.

Kyoto and New Zealand

Has been cracking me up, so I've been following the story which led me to this piece by Steyn on the UN.

Enjoy

Sunni's are getting involved

And thumbing their noses at Zarqawi. Awesome

Iraqi Constitution

This woman needs to be heard over and over again.
"I thought that President Bush and all the allies who supported the Iraq war aspired to bring democracy and liberty to all Iraqis. Aren't Iraqi girls and women human enough to share in that dream?"

Thank goodness it was postponed. Maybe it will give them enough time to fix it.

9/11 Commission

Still trying to work the story out. But the anonymous source has outed himself.

And in this story I wonder where the heck this woman was while Richard Clarke was spouting off.

UPDATE: Steyn gets a turn at it too.

Tuesday, August 16, 2005

Kelos

I was almost going to close up the computer for the day when this story caught my eye. Can I say unf***ing believable again here?!!!! Those poor people can only laugh at this.

UPDATE: How can this possibly be true? To charge rent wouldn't they have to own? And to own, wouldn't the lawsuits have to be settled? I haven't found a second source for this story.

Is it possible, that the Fairfield Weekly is another ScrappleFace?
Any realtors out there want to add 2 cents?

On Women drivers

This cracked me up this morning.

Afghanistan

Afghan soldiers in action.

Happy Blogging Anniversay

to Varifrank. I've always liked him.

Bill Clinton

Could've gotten Osama. Just didn't have the proof. He'd of taken care of everything, if only.......

Iraqi Constitution

I agree with Jeff that the delay is fine.

Iran isn't going away. Though wouldn't that be nice?

Monday, August 15, 2005

Sunnis

Having enough of Zarqawi. I can believe that.

History

This was just a good read about the Japanese surrender, or rather about Toshikazu Kase representing the Japanese.

Iraqi Constitution

No hard news on this yet, so I'll post this. It's a big day!

President Bush

This is the Bush that I imagine is how he is. It amazes me that other people have such an opposite view of him. Talking about his "evil squinty eyes" etc. I know it happens, I have nonspecific dislike for plenty of people. It's nice to see Newsweek show a side of him I have always thought was there.

9/11 Commission

May well have done things right in regards to the Able Danger information.

Sunday, August 14, 2005

Sunday

We lost the war in Iraq already? When did that happen? (via Powerline)

Chemicals found near Mosul. Post Sadaam, but making people wonder.

Iraqi perspective on the latest Al qaeda communication.

Steyn

On culture.

Friday, August 12, 2005

Good to note

I didn't confirm his sources, but this looks legit.

Able Danger

Just gets more interesting.

Iraq

I've read in dozens of places, Iraqi mostly, throughout the war, that there won't be a civil war there. It sounds like some protests are going on, but this guy's perspective makes things sound fine.

9/11 Commission

And Able Danger.

Awesome

Powerline has started a little news service.

Chrenkoff

I'm going to miss this guy. Here are a number of his today.

Threats to good news writers.

Blogs taking up the slack.

Afghanistan is to blame vs Iraq.

Gitmo and Harry Potter.

And finally Rumors of Bin Laden movement. (no - not bowel movement, border crossing movement!)

Day by Day Cartoon

Has a link for raising fund for cancer research.

That March in Atlanta

Was sooo over the top I keep expecting to see it on "Best of the Web". We'll have to settle for The Moderate Voice.

Juan Cole

How does this guy get readers? I never read him, but here's a link to a fisking of one of his articles.

Chrenkoff

More on his retirement.
It was this guy along with Iraq the Model (with cool sandstorm pics today) who got me started reading blogs. I know I was searching for stories on the war from the perspective of other countries and that's how I found them. My path to becoming a blogaholic was set at that point. Chrenkoff will be missed.

Sad News in the Blogosphere

Good news for Chrenkoff.

Alabama

Good for them! Kelos is fixed in Alabama anyway.

Who IS this guy?

Sheesh - a member of parliament.

Air America

Have I posted anything about them yet? If not, here you go. Amazing.

Funny.

Voter Fraud

For the next time someone wants to argue about Republican cheating.

Thursday, August 04, 2005

This is funny.

Steven Vincent

Some words about Steven from The Mudville Gazette.

Steyn

On Blair and the UK. (missed this one the other day!)

Immigration

Is getting some attention again.

Kelos

The mighty Times-Call picked this story up last week!

ABC and Russia

As a private citizen, I think I'd refuse further information to ABC too. This post makes sense to me. As president of a democracy, with bigger ideals than my pettyness, I hope I'd look a bit more at the big picture.

Steven Vincent's

This is cool.

US leaving 13 bases in Germany

I didn't know we had that many bases to leave.

Quick google search:
There are 44 bases there.

•Each year, Germany contributes nearly $1 billion to the upkeep ofU.S. bases in Germany.(Council on Foreign Relations, 2003)
• Ramstein Air Base, the biggest U.S. base in Germany, costs about $1billion annually—an amount equal to Germany's yearly contribution toward the upkeep of U.S. bases.(Council on Foreign Relations, 2003)
• On average, the other 43 bases cost about $240 million each — about the same as a single F/A-22 fighter jet.(Council on Foreign Relations, 2003)
• With 34,000 American residents, Kaiserslautern is the largestAmerican community outside of the United States. (City of Kaiserslautern, 2003)
• Since 1945, some 17 million Americans have served tours of duty in Germany. Many return time and again as tourists.(German Foreign Office, 2003)
